Charles Dickens "Hard Times"
Good Book. I had to read it for school this year. One of the deep themes that runs through Hard Times is the effect of parents upon their children. Most importantly, of course, is the Gradgrind family, and the effect the "Gradgrind system" of education has upon Louisa, Tom, and Sissy. But also interesting is the relationship between Mrs. Pegler and her son Josiah Bounderby.
What have you learned from Hard Times about child-rearing? What did Mr. Gradgrind do wrong when raising his children? What did he do right? How does Mr. Bounderby factor into this? Which relationships may we regard as "successful," and why?
